Zeus Augustus Schultz had been limping on his front left leg for a few days. I had taken him to the Vet who suggested he may have a minor sprain in his shoulder. He prescribed him muscle relaxers and sent him home. A day or two later I realized his left arm had swollen to double the size of his right arm! I immediately took him to the ER where they tried a combination of antibiotics while they waited on the blood culture to come back.
Long story short, the infection spread to his neck and chest and I was informed the only way to save his life was to amputate. It was an extremely emotional decision for me, and it seems to be going pretty tough on him. He’s a Great Dane, so learning how to walk with three legs needs to happen immediately. He’s an amazing dog and I’m thinking of getting him into service work when he’s ready. Any tips on how to get his confidence back would be greatly appreciated.
